PM Mitsotakis talks with UNESCO Director-General for the vandalism of Hagia Sophia

Audrey Azoulay reiterated the Agency's concern about the consequences of converting the temple into a mosque & stressed she will seek explanations from Turkey

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a telephone conversation with UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay on Thursday regarding the vandalism of the Hagia Sophia’s Imperial Gate in Constantinople..

During the communication, Mr. Mitsotakis expressed his deep regret and disgust for the condition in which the symbol of Christianity has fallen, which is also a World Heritage Site.

He also stressed that these actions do not respect the history of the monument and endanger its integrity and universal character.

For her part, the UNESCO Director-General reiterated the Organization’s concern about the consequences of the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque and stressed that she would seek explanations from the Turkish authorities.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Mrs Azoulay agreed that immediate measures should be taken for the protection and security of the church in coordination with the competent authorities.

The Prime Minister also expressed his concern about the Turkish efforts to change the character of the Monastery of Chora as well.
