Turkey launches military incursion into Northern Syria

Since 2016, Turkey has invaded northern Syria three times

Newsroom May 26 09:11

Turkey is sending forces into northern Syria after President Erdogan announced troops would be invading the country after the decision by the National Security Council.

Since 2016, Turkey has invaded northern Syria three times.

In a statement issued by the National Security Council, “operations are to be conducted at our southern borders do not aim at the territorial integrity of our neighbours and are necessary for national security.”

The Turkish security council in its statement also made reference to Greece: “The Security Council examined the escalating provocative actions of Greece in the Aegean, which violate international law and the treaties to which it is a party (a hint for the demilitarisation of the islands), as well as the efforts of Greece to abuse the alliances in which it is a member and in which he should actually cooperate”.

The statement added that “we have made it clear that we will continue to resolutely defend the rights and interests of our nation.”

The meeting of the Security Council comes just a few hours after the new rant by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu against Greece.

According to Hurriyet, speaking to reporters immediately after his visit to Israel, he answered a relevant question, speaking against Greece on the occasion of Ankara’s well-known story about the alleged demilitarisation of the Aegean islands, saying: “We are not bluffing. If Athens does not comply, we will move things forward.”

Turkish Foreign Minister Tsavousoglu made the following remarks regarding Greece’s statements and moves in recent days: “We have said openly in the US: They have a policy of balance in Cyprus as well as in Turkey and Greece and the Aegean islands … We see a deviation from this balance, we told US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, we warned the USA. While people said that bases in one NATO country are not a threat to another NATO country, this increase has not escaped our attention, of course. “
