Greek response to Turkey: “Nothing can harm our sovereign rights” – 16 maps against the Turkish propaganda

AKP spokesman Omer Celik: "We can come suddenly one night..." - Turkish Defense Minister: "Greece is not learning from history"

Newsroom June 9 06:00

The representative of the Erdogan’s Turkish Justice & Development Party (AKP), Omer Celik, made clear threats against Greece, even without naming it.

Celik’s threats were made before the new provocative statements of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as his representative took care to prepare the ground.

Posting on twitter photos from the big exercise EFES 2022, with a scenario of landing on islands, the close associate of the Turkish President wrote: “We may come suddenly one night…”.

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar also sent a message against Greece in his speech during the exercise “EFES 2022”.

“The goals that have been set today have been achieved. We congratulate our friends and allies who contributed significantly to the success of the exercise. Once again, we saw in the field the results of the weapons and ammunition produced by our domestic and national defense industry. Greece continues its aggressive policy. It persistently continues its irrational claims without learning from history. Greece shamelessly accuses Turkey of expansionism. Arms and alliance efforts are futile”.

The Greek response

The Greek Government spokesman Giannis Oikonomou gave a harsh response to the Turkish leadership’s provocative statements.

“Unhistorical allegations and vain myths can neither challenge nor, let alone, substitute International Law and international treaties. In general, absolutely nothing can in any way harm our sovereign rights and our national sovereignty. That is why we call on Turkey to stop its tactics of provocation and to realize that the only way is a responsible and honest communication, in the context of international law and with absolute respect for sovereignty”.

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement “regarding Turkish revisionism in the period 1973-2022 – Depiction in 16 maps“:

In an effort to increase the wider public’s awareness of Turkish revisionism, the attached maps depict in a vivid and irrefutable way the Turkish illegal unilateral actions and claims.

The maps begin chronologically with the status quo enshrined in the Lausanne (1923) and Paris (1947) Treaties.

Turkish claims are then presented, beginning with the illegal licensing of the Turkish state oil company (TPAO) for exploration of oil fields in areas of the Greek continental shelf in the North Aegean in 1973, and continuing with the attempt to usurp  Greece’s  responsibility for Search and Rescue services in half of the Aegean in the 1980s, the “grey zone” theory in the 1990s, further  escalation with the granting of new licenses in the Eastern Mediterranean, the endorsement of the “Blue Homeland” as an official doctrine, the “Turkish-Libyan Memorandum”, reaching as far as the Turkish theory of the demilitarization status of the Aegean islands.

The above-mentioned maps document the extent of Turkish revisionism in order to upend the status quo, violating International Law and the International Law of the Sea, and threatening peace, security and stability in our region.
