High temperatures are expected to hit Greece until Sunday 21/08. The peak of the hot spell is estimated for the two-day period Friday 19/08 – Saturday 20/08 when the temperature is quite likely to reach 41-42 degrees Celsius in places.
Athens will experience the intensity of the mini heatwave as conditions will be classified as category 0 today, while an upgrade to category 1 is expected for tomorrow. On Saturday, the temperature will drop slightly in western and northern Greece, but will remain high in all other regions of the country. Its maximum value is predicted to reach 40 to 41 degrees on the mainland and 37 degrees Celsius on the islands.
On Sunday, the temperature will drop noticeably throughout the country and will return to close to the normal levels for the season (in most areas its maximum value will be 32 to 35 degrees Celsius), while the weather in northern Greece, and especially in Macedonia, will fluctuate.
The weather today
For today, the weather is forecast to be good with high temperatures prevailing throughout the country. Clouds will develop in mountainous continental areas from noon. Dust concentrations in the atmosphere will be slightly increased.
The temperature will vary in Western Macedonia from 16 to 35 degrees, in the rest of Northern Greece from 18 to 37-38, in Epirus from 18 to 37 degrees, in Thessaly from 18 to 38-39, in the rest of the mainland from 21 to 38-39 degrees, in the Ionian islands from 23 to 35 and in the Aegean islands and Crete from 21 to 35 degrees, while locally in the Eastern Aegean, in the Dodecanese and in Southern Crete the maximum will reach 37-39 degrees Celsius.
The winds in the continental areas will be weak, in the Aegean and the Ionian they will blow from northwesterly directions with intensities of 4-5 Beaufort, while in the southern and southeastern parts of the Aegean the wind intensities will reach 6 Beaufort.
