Greek-managed vessel transported coal from Russia after EU sanctions, Bloomberg reports

According to the report, the bulker Stavros loaded 53,000 tons of coal from Russia's Taman terminal on August 29

Newsroom September 15 03:31

A vessel operated by a Greek shipping company was carrying coal from a Russian port late last month, after European Union sanctions on the commodity took effect, according to shipping data reviewed by Bloomberg news agency.

The report states that Eastern Mediterranean Maritime bulker Stavros (owned by Thanasis Martinos) loaded 53,000 tons of coal from Russia’s Taman terminal on August 29, according to data from analytics firms Kpler and Logistic OS.

It arrived at a port near the city of Iskenderun in Turkey on Sept. 5, according to Bloomberg ship tracking data.

A company spokesman declined to comment on the ship’s cargo but said there could be no sanctions violation if the destination was not in the EU, according to Bloomberg.

It is unclear whether the coal comes from Russia or who ultimately owns the ship, while the shipment’s final destination and use are also unknown.

The Commission has previously stated that the sanctions apply to any coal shipments originating in Russia, regardless of their destination.
