Important antiquities of the late Roman times came to light during the works carried out by Athens Municipality crews for the reconstruction of the Theater Square area in the centre of the Greek capital.

According to the excavation research, which is in progress, in the southern part of the square, at an average depth of 1.00m, architectural remains of a fairly large building complex were found. This complex consists of different spaces, which have been partially uncovered and are kept at a low height.

The middle space, with a side length of 7.40 m, is delimited by marble stone plinths in the form of a column, with grooves on their upper surface for the insertion of railings or breastplates. The floors of the rooms were covered with opus sectile marble and mosaic with stylised floral and geometric decoration, parts of which were preserved in good condition and apparently testify to the luxurious character of the building.
Earlier excavations in neighbouring properties have revealed architectural elements (brickwork, mosaic floors) that seem to belong to the same building complex.

The Ministry of Culture and Sports is in constant collaboration with the Municipality of Athens in order to continue the archaeological excavations without causing any delays in the area’s regeneration project.
