Greek rescue team EMAK made the most rescues from all the teams in quake-stricken Turkey

EMAK has completed five of the total of 58 rescues

Newsroom February 9 05:59

As rescue operations continue in Turkey to save people under the rubble following the devastating earthquakes that struck south-eastern Turkey and Northwestern Syria, it is revealed that the Greek rescue team of EMAK has completed five of the total of 58 rescues from all the international rescue teams involved.

At this moment, out of a total of 88 crews from all over the world carrying out rescue operations in conjunction with the Turkish forces, having so far located 58 survivors, five were rescued thanks to the intervention of the men of the two Greek teams of EMAK. This is the image that the heads of the Joint Operations and Rescue Coordination Center of the Fire Service have from the online connection with Turkey. According to information, the biggest problem is focused on the city of Antioch, where crews worked on five apartment buildings, and at noon on Thursday, they switched fields, as far as the survivor part is concerned their work is done.

The severe cold and low temperatures reaching -5 to -7 degrees are hindering the work of the teams, which as soon as darkness falls, are working under freezing temperatures and cold.

In addition to the firefighter Konstantinos Nikas, whose father had rescued little Andreas in the 1995 earthquake in Greece, the case of the firefighter Konstantinos Athanasopoulos is also noteworthy, who, after rescuing a child and the second one died in his arms burst into tears, as he himself is the father of a five-month-old child, while his father was also a firefighter.

In the two teams of EMAK from Athens and Thessaloniki which were unified, 38 firefighters, and 8 people from EKAB (3 doctors and 5 nurses) are currently operating, while with them is also the president of OASP, Euthymios Lekkas.
