The mayor of Ioannina Moses Elisaf has died

He was 69 and he had serious health issues

The mayor of the city of Ioannina, Moises Elisaf, who was facing health problems, passed away at the age of 69.

His death is a huge loss for the city, which he served as a doctor, as a university teacher, but also as mayor since 2019, without however being able to complete his term.

Moses Elisaf was born in 1954 in Ioannina. His parents were Holocaust survivors who managed to escape the roundup in which most of the Jews of Ioannina were deported to Auschwitz, with only 9% of the community surviving.

He studied medicine at the University of Athens and specialized in pathology. He was professor of pathology at the University of Ioannina and president of the Israeli Community of Ioannina and member of the Board of Directors of the Central Jewish Council of Greece.

In the municipal elections of 2019, he was a candidate for mayor of Ioannina with the combination “Ioannina – New Era”. In the first round he received a percentage of 23.82% and in the second he prevailed over his co-candidate and predecessor, Thomas Bega, with 50.33%. He was the first mayor of Jewish origin to be elected in Greece.
