Russia claims US behind Kremlin drone attack

Peskov said Moscow is considering its retaliatory actions

Russia claimed Thursday that the United States was behind a drone attack on the Kremlin that it said was a Ukrainian attempt to assassinate President Vladimir Putin.

The accusation comes less than a day after Moscow said that it had thwarted an overnight drone strike on the building which is where President resides — something Kiev vehemently denied.

On Thursday Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov went further, claiming that Washington had masterminded the attack.

“We are well aware that decisions on such a level of terrorist attacks are made not in Kyiv, but in Washington,” he said in his daily briefing with reporters. “Kiev only does what it is told to do.”

Peskov dismissed American and Ukrainian attempts to “disown” the drone incident as “absolutely ridiculous.”

“Kiev is not given the right to choose. Movements are often dictated from across the Atlantic. We are well aware of this,” the Kremlin spokesman continued.

When asked about Moscow’s “response”, Peskov did not give details, noting only that “we can only talk about well-thought-out steps that meet the country’s interests”.

Finally, he said that Putin is not planning a speech about the drone attack on the Kremlin. At the same time, Peskov said that Putin is working in Moscow today, where his security will be strengthened. The Russian president “is working in the Kremlin, there will be an important discussion with the minister of economic development,” Peskov said, noting that his security would be “strengthened” after yesterday’s incident.
