Relatives mourning their loved one were left in shock when upon opening the coffin discovered that another woman had been placed inside.

The macabre incident occurred in Bodeika Achaia last Saturday when they removed the coffin lid.

Speaking to Mega TV, the daughter of a 79-year-old woman with a complicated medical history reported how her mother was taken to the Rio hospital where she died.

The family called the funeral parlour to sort things out, with the staff of the services saying they “didn’t want any of the relatives to go to the morgue.”

But when the funeral parlour brought the coffin to the home of the deceased, relatives and acquaintances gathered there and discovered that another elderly woman was inside.

“As the funeral parlour opened the coffin we were in for a macabre sight, it wasn’t our mother. And we left shocked,” said the 79-year-old’s daughter.

“We told the funeral parlour this is not our mother, close the coffin, I don’t know what you will do, bring us our mother,” says the daughter of the deceased.

The funeral parlour contacted the Rio hospital and, according to the family, the mix-up happened when the two bodies were confused due to synonymy at the morgue.

“Indeed the funeral home notified Rio and they said there is another Dimitropoulou at the morgue and they got the name wrong. My mother was Vasiliki and they sent us Niki,” says the 79-year-old daughter. Finally, the family found themselves at the morgue after the great commotion they went through and identified the body.
