The aftermath and destruction of the fires in Kalyvia, after yesterday’s blaze, which started from Neo Kouvaras, at noon on Monday and extended to Anavyssos, Saronida, and Lagonisi, are devastating.

The situation, as far as the fire fronts are concerned, is better now. However, protothema.gr’s road trip to Kalyvia shows burnt houses and scorched land. According to the estimate of the mayor of Lavreotiki Dimitris Loukas, more than 30,000 acres were reduced to ashes.

According to Mr. Loukas, the destruction is extensive on the north and south side of Paneio Oros. The battle with the flames was fought unabated during the night when Feriza and Sakka were burning. The authorities fought a battle and succeeded in preventing the fire from spreading to the Kamariza – Sounio forest.

In the evening hours, there was a major resurgence in the Stipiza settlement in Kalyvia. A warehouse was burnt down, while houses were engulfed in flames.

The winds were blowing very strongly, hampering the efforts of the firefighters. The presence of police forces was constant, to check if there were people inside the houses.

The flames were burning everything in their path. Many residents stayed close to their homes to save them in any way they could, despite orders from the authorities.
