A very touching photo posted on Facebook by the Kapsiotis Veterinary Clinic in Trikala is making the rounds on the internet and shows a lost dog lying just before the bridge of Karavoporos. The animal escaped the flooding in the area and, it seems, is waiting for its guardian.
The situation is desperate in almost the whole area of the prefecture of Trikala after the onslaught of bad weather Daniel. Shortly after 10 yesterday evening, water covered the bridge of Karavoporos and the police immediately closed the national road Trikala – Pyli.
The municipality invited citizens who were staying in ground floor houses to either evacuate to their relatives who lived on one floor or to be accommodated at the Babanara Hotel in the Gate.
Huge damage was caused in many villages of the prefecture, such as in Drosero, just outside the town, where the water reached a height of up to 1.5 metres, covering roads, cars, and even the first floors of houses.
At the same time, tons of water have fallen into the Pinios River and caused flooding of crops.
And in the midst of all this, countless animals have gone missing. Stray animals have lost their usual shelters and other animals are looking for their guardians while wandering around in between debris and the mud.
The catastrophic effects of the floods have no end…People have died (6, so far); many (even hundreds it is feared) others are missing; the whereabouts and safety of animals are a concern, while property has been completely destroyed.
This is what we know about the animals in the flood-stricken areas at this point:
– From Larissa: Due to the risk of overflowing of the river Pinios, the shelter of the Larissa Animal Welfare Society needs to be evacuated. People need volunteers with farm vehicles or other types of cars to help. Call 6945719693.
– From Volos: One shelter in Volos was destroyed, but people managed to save the animals. Part of the food needs were covered by purchasing from the local partner store. But the important thing is to find a new place to set up the shelter. They are looking for a site near the Salt Flats. We have already started the search, however, any help would be appreciated.
– From Karditsa: Although there were disasters there too, fortunately, the shelter animals are safe in temporary places. Part of their food needs were also covered by purchases from the local partner store.
– From Trikala: From the beginning, we have been in contact with @nv_meri, who with his team managed to save many animals from the affected villages. All animals are safe at the Municipal Shelter of Trikala. The company @petcity.gr will cover part of the food needs.
The destruction is immense. We are beside the flooded areas to offer our help in any way we can.
