Germany: People missing after cargo ship collision in the North Sea

The ships Polesie and Verity collided early this morning near the German island of Helgoland and one of them sank

People are missing after two cargo ships collided near the German island of Helgoland in the North Sea, the central administration for dealing with emergency situations at sea announced today.

According to the Associated Press, the ships Polesie and Verity collided around 06:00 a.m. Greek time about 12 nautical miles southwest of Helgoland.

The British-flagged Verity has sunk. The central administration announced that one person was rescued from the water and received medical attention, while rescuers are searching for several more people.

A rescue boat, police boats, an aircraft with special sensors and a helicopter are involved in the rescue operation.

The Verity had departed from Bremen in Germany bound for the English port of Immingham.

The Polesie, with a crew of 22 and a Bahamian flag, was sailing from Hamburg to La Coruna in Spain and has not sunk.
