A fatal head wound, apparently from a gunshot wound, was the cause of death of Thomas Kingston, son-in-law of Britain’s Prince Michael, according to police who found a gun next to the body.

Kingston, who worked in the financial sector, had been found dead last Sunday. Rescuers called by his family members found him dead. The family had initially not released details of the 45-year-old man’s sudden death, asking that their privacy be respected.

Today Friday, Sky News reports, the coroner described the circumstances of the man’s death. On Sunday, February 25, Kingston visited his parents’ home in Cotswolds where he had lunch with them. His father later walked their dogs.

When he returned, Kingston was not at home.

After about 30 minutes his mother went looking for him.

His father forced his way into a locked utility building when he could not get an answer. He found Kingston dead with a “head wound.” There was a gun at the scene. Emergency services were called at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police are convinced the death is not suspicious.

In a statement, his wife Gabriella said the sudden death was a great shock to the family. King Charles and Camilla expressed their condolences. Prince Michael was a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth so Gabriella was the King’s second cousin.

The British media pointed out that Prince Michael and his wife had attended the memorial service for the former King Constantine held on Tuesday morning.

Kingston’s death was announced a few hours later, some 48 hours after he passed away. For now, there is no announcement on when Kingston’s funeral will take place.

His wife, though low in the line of succession to the British throne, was a person for whom Queen Elizabeth held Queen Elizabeth in high regard.

She had even attended Gabriella’s wedding with her husband Prince Philip ‘without a second thought’.

He and his wife had appeared in public at an event at the National Gallery in London.

The Daily Mail reports that the absence of Prince William, heir to the British throne, from the memorial service for former King Constantine is not linked to Kingston’s loss.

Buckingham Palace had clarified that there was no cause for concern behind William’s absence, but “a personal matter”.

Present at the memorial service, however, were Prince Michael and his wife, despite the fact that their son-in-law had passed away a few hours earlier, although this has not yet been made public.

Constantine was also Gabriella’s godfather.
