“SOS” signal from the municipality of Gavdos: Continuous flows in recent days – Another 91 immigrants arrived in less than 24 hours

We are in a very difficult position, says the mayor of the island

Newsroom March 12 05:43

Another 91 migrants have arrived, in just a few hours, from Monday afternoon until this morning in Tripiti Gavdos in Crete, including a woman with her three children.

“Gavdos can’t take it anymore”, says the mayor of the island, Lillian Stefanaki, who has to manage the constant flow of migrants in recent days.

Since last Saturday, arrivals on the island’s shores have been daily.

A floating patrol boat of the Coast Guard rushed to the area and the authorities were considering the possibility of transferring the mother and her children to Chania where the conditions of hospitality are humane.

“We are in a very difficult position. Something should be done immediately, before something happens that will be bad for everyone,” she told the website neakriti obviously troubled Stefanaki, reiterating that “there are no supplies, there are few resources and these are the facts of Gavdos. If no boat comes, what will happen to these people?” she asked.

The numbers of migrants landing in Gavdos are now reaching alarming levels.

Indicatively, 26 migrants of Egyptian origin landed late Monday afternoon in Tripiti and from there they walked to the settlement of Korfos where they were spotted by residents.

Another 65, most of them Egyptians and seven from Bangladesh, were spotted this morning in Tripiti.

Among them were a mother with her three children aged between three and ten years old and 23 minors aged between 15 and 17 years old.

It is not clear whether all 91 were on the same float or whether they arrived in two different ones.

“Supplies are limited. The truth is that we all know how vulnerable and weak Gavdos is.

It is not possible to withstand such a situation.

The municipality of Gavdos has two or three people trying to keep the island standing.

Lately all we have been doing is dealing with the immigrants.

The future of the island, our citizens, everything has been left behind,” Stefanaki explained.

In a state of constant vigilance are also the social services of the municipality of Chania.

The Deputy Mayor of Social Policy Eleni Zervoudaki explained that the counting procedures as well as the case files, carried out at a rapid pace by the port authorities of Chania which serves the short stay of migrants in the Children’s Camps of Kalathas, or in the reception station cruise visitors at the port of Souda.
