A Greek man opened the Greek flag at Hagia Sophia and wrote “My beloved city, forever Greek” – Reactions in Turkey

Provocative Turkish responses on social media with indirect references to the Smyrna disaster

Newsroom March 17 12:56

Reactions were caused in Turkey by the move of Greek tourist Apostolos Papatheodoros to be photographed inside Hagia Sophia holding the Greek flag in his hands.

In the caption of the photo posted on Instagram, the Greek tourist wrote “My beloved city, forever Greek”.

The posting of the photo and its republication by Turkish media provoked reactions from Turks on social media with most of them calling it provocative and many blaming the Turkish authorities for allowing the move, they note.

Several of them even chose to respond in an unacceptable and premature manner, writing, among other things, “I hope you know how to swim”, “the sea is cold my love”, “you miss swimming”, making an indirect reference to the Smyrna disaster.
