PM Mitsotakis responded to Kasselakis by stating the elections will take place at the end of the four-year term

He also expressed his belief that New Democracy will prevail in the European elections, thus becoming the dominant political force

Newsroom April 9 03:19

“We won’t do him the favor, national elections will take place at the end of the four-year term and in the European elections, New Democracy will once again be the dominant political force,” said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, “responding” to the request of the President of SYRIZA, Stefanos Kasselakis, whom he accused of seeking to destabilise the country.

“Today, I read why the leader of the opposition party believes the country should go to early elections. And I wondered, wasn’t it just a few days ago in an interview where he set the benchmark for himself at the 17% that SYRIZA received in the national elections? This is a contradiction: he comes and acknowledges that they will be the second party by a large margin but at the same time asks for national elections. Why? To destabilise the country? We won’t do him the favor. National elections will take place at the end of the four-year term and in the European elections, New Democracy will once again be the dominant political force, having the support and trust of Greek women and men,” said Mr. Mitsotakis during his speech to the citizens of Polichni.

The Prime Minister referred to the stakes of the European elections, stating: “Today is April 9th, we are exactly 2 months away from the European elections on June 9th, where we will once again send the message of the strong New Democracy and a country that will steadily and boldly move forward.

We are here to implement our government program every day and make the life of each and every one better.”

He addressed the questions raised especially by the youth, why should they go to the European elections to vote when they don’t even go to the national elections, and he posed two reasons that make their participation imperative – as he said:

“1. The stronger New Democracy is in the European elections, the more assertive it will be in Europe, where it will achieve even greater funding, even greater support, even more interventions that will make your lives better.

2. Political stability and commitment to the implementation of our work must not be disrupted in any way as a result of the European elections.”

The Prime Minister made a special reference to Western Thessaloniki, saying: “In Western Thessaloniki, the heart of the New Democracy coalition beats strongly.

For the first time, a government has seriously and systematically addressed longstanding issues faced by the municipalities of Western Thessaloniki and has provided tangible solutions. The Pavlos Melas Park, the Cancer hospital, which will be built in the Karatasou camp, the new suburban park funded by private investment, the new schools under construction where some have already working.

These are interventions that put Western Thessaloniki at the center of government initiatives and have been largely funded by European resources.”
