Sakellaropoulou with Captain Panagiotis Tsakos in Uruguay (pics)

'...Uruguayans are synonymous with Greek-lovers' says the captain

Newsroom April 22 04:31

The President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou is on an official visit to Uruguay until 23 April and to Chile from 24 to 26 April, at the invitation of their Presidents Luis Lacalle Pou and Gabriel Boric respectively.

He is in Uruguay with Captain Panagiotis Tsakos.

The Tsakos family is the most important business name in the Latin American country and has been respected and appreciated for 10 years since it has also done social work.

In Montevideo, Captain Panayiotis has created the Tsakos Industrias Navales shipyard.

Also, the “Maria Tsakos Foundation” in Uruguay was recognised by the decision of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs of April 6, 2021 as the “Department of Greek Language” (DGL).

With this recognition, the ‘Maria Tsakos Foundation’ is established as a provider of Greek-language education in Uruguay.

To date, the work of the Foundation, which has been carried out for almost four decades in this core of small Greece based in Montevideo, in terms of the dissemination of ancient Greek culture and the teaching of the Greek language, has been widely recognised by institutions and governments.

Since its inception, some 4,000 students, Uruguayan philhellenes, have been taught free lessons in the Neolellenic language, philosophy, literature, poetry, traditional dances, singing and Greek cooking.

As often mentioned by the Rev. Panagiotis N. Tsakos ‘…Uruguayans are synonymous with Greek-lovers, and the establishment in 1978 of the Maria Tsakos Foundation is a small counterpart of this love’.

“All cash”: Netflix is preparing a strategic move to accelerate its $83 billion deal with Warner Bros.

The idea of establishing the Tsakos Foundation was born in the mid-1970s, when Captain Panagiotis N. Tsakos visited Montevideo, Uruguay for business purposes.

His contact with the Uruguayans revealed to him a people with a special culture, a people – a people – a lover of the ancient Greek spirit.

In return, he decided to set up the Foundation, with the aim of passing on to the philhellenic Uruguayans the language, culture, philosophy and traditions of Greece.
