A lone black swan, an “escapee” since it doesn’t not do us the honour of living in our country, has been spotted enjoying the  Delta of Evros River.

The black swan was spotted by the staff of the Management Unit of the protected area and posted photos of the beautiful black swan on Facebook, calling it a “pleasant surprise”.

The black swan lives in Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand and prefers large lakes, lagoons, wetlands, rivers and can also occur along coastlines. This was the case with the black swan that appeared in Porto Rafti.

The black swan, like other swan species, is monogamous. It usually mates for life with one mate and if that mate dies it does not try to find another.

Its wingspan is up to 2 metres and it feeds on aquatic plants and algae.
