Niologio.gov.gr: Greek flag with five “clicks” from every continent

Significant reform is underway in the critical sector of commercial shipping

Newsroom May 14 01:05

The government, through the Ministries of Digital Governance and Shipping, is initiating a significant milestone regarding the strong and exceptionally critical sector of shipping for Greek interests, by implementing digital ship registration under the Greek flag starting from June.

This has been a longstanding demand of the shipping community, as the complex and lengthy procedures in the relevant services discourage many companies from having ships flying the Greek flag.

Denmark paved the way last year by implementing digital registration procedures, and now Greece is following the same path, with the official announcement expected at this year’s “Poseidonia” event.

Furthermore, the responsible Deputy Minister of Digital Governance, Konstantinos Kyranakis, who has been overseeing the issue along with the Minister of Shipping, Christos Stylianidis, and the General Secretary of Shipping, Vangelis Kyriazopoulos, will conduct the first registration live through the gov.gr platform.

With the new platform set to go online in early June, not only is the process will be digitized, but also Greece’s old ship registry archive.

Essentially, shipowners are given the opportunity to electronically submit their vessel registration application from anywhere in the world through the platform, in both Greek and English.

Moreover, the five responsible declarations are abolished and replaced with five “clicks” on terms, significantly reducing the aforementioned paperwork.

Consequently, the competent authorities will be able to verify all documents faster and electronically through the application, approving the application directly with automatic updating of the shipping company.
