Their tenure in the civil service is among other demands being demanded by five-year firefighters at the protest rally planned by the uniformed members of the Fire Service on Wednesday, June 5 at 11am outside the Ministry of Civil Protection.
The main reason why the 2,350 five-year service firefighters, who are considered along with seasonal firefighters the spearhead of the great summer struggle that has already begun, are demanding to join the public service is the retirement age and their anxiety that they will lose their jobs if the shortages are covered by new recruitments through advertisements.
As the president of their national union Kostas Papantonis explains to us, firefighters serving in the Corps retire at 48 while the five-year service , in order to complete their service to retire can stay until 75!
Currently 35 seasonal firefighters are over 67 while 485 are 60-67 years old.
