The heatwave that hit the country during the week with the mercury showing up to 44 degrees in some areas has started to subside since yesterday. In fact, there were even bursts of rain in the north on Friday, but the weather has subsequently improved. Today and tomorrow the temperature will be at normal for the season and will not exceed 35 degrees Celsius.

However, from Monday temperatures will start to rise again. According to EMY director Thodoris Kolydas, the period from will be the hottest with the mercury later on showing a downward trend (from 24 to 30 June 2024).

Using numerical & climate models for only two weeks, it is concluded that our country will have above-normal temperatures. The hottest period is from June 17 to 23, with mercury later showing a downward trend (from June 24 to 30, 2024).

Yesterday the temperature reached 42 °C in Crete – 17 meteo.gr/E.A.A.A. stations with temperatures above 40 °C

The heat wave receded on Friday 14/06, however, high temperatures were again recorded by the network of meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens automatic weather stations, with the mercury exceeding 41 °C in Crete and the Dodecanese. As shown in the map in the image below, the highest maximum temperature was recorded in Peza Heraklion and was equal to 42.5 °C. In addition, 17 out of 511 active stations (at present) recorded temperatures above 40 °C, and 117 stations recorded temperatures above 37 °C.

Very good weather conditions are expected across the country with a few clouds, locally increasing during the warmer hours of the day on the mainland.

The temperature will range in Western Macedonia from 10 to 30 degrees Celsius, in the rest of northern Greece from 13 to 32 degrees Celsius, in Thessaly from 15 to 34-35 degrees Celsius, in Epirus from 16 to 32 degrees Celsius, in the rest of the continental parts from 18 to 33-34 degrees Celsius, in the Ionian Islands from 18 to 31 degrees Celsius and in the Aegean islands and Crete from 20 to 31-33 degrees Celsius.

The winds in the Aegean Sea will blow from the north with intensities of 4-6 Beaufort, but in the northwestern Aegean Sea they will shift to southeast with intensities of 3-5 Beaufort. In the Ionian Sea the winds will blow from northwestern directions with intensities of 4-5 Beaufort.
