Staikouras: 900 new buses will be in circulation in Attica by the end of 2025

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport stressed that the fleet will be renewed in Thessaloniki as well

Newsroom July 5 10:19

By the end of 2025, 900-950 new buses will be on the streets of Attica, while the fleet will be renewed in Thessaloniki as well, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, told SKAI 100.3.

He explained that there are already 140 new electric buses on the streets of Athens and 110 on the streets of Thessaloniki, which are fully accessible to all citizens.

Mr. Staikouras made it known that the day before yesterday, the audit conference approved two contracts in which private individuals, namely six bus companies and two tourist agencies, will undertake the circulation of 211 new buses, in nine months at the latest, in Eastern and Western Attica, while another 300 gas buses are expected on the streets of the capital.

On fare evasion, he said that the number of auditors is being increased, noting that the goal is that every month, as more revenue is collected in the OSY from the audits, there will be announcements saying that this money will be returned to improving transportation for the benefit of citizens.

The minister also said that a project to modernize 14 trains on Metro Line 1 is underway; the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

On the trains that do not have air conditioning, he said that the first priority is to find the resources of €39 million to address the problem.

Mr. Staikouras also noted that it is a personal commitment of him and the Prime Minister to find the 59 million required for the maintenance and proper functioning of the elevators in the metro stations.
