Olympic Games: Stefanos Tsitsipas Advances

Tsitsipas prevails over Bergs with a score of 2-1 (7-6, 1-6, 6-1) and will play against the Briton Evans in the 2nd round. Later, Tsitsipas (after 20:00) will play in doubles with his brother Petros, who lost his singles match 2-0 (2-6, 3-6)

Newsroom July 28 06:39

Stefanos Tsitsipas saw his first-round match in the Olympic tennis tournament go to three sets (lasting almost 2.5 hours), but all’s well that ends. The Greek champion defeated Belgian Zizou Bergs, who had the crowd on his side, 2-1, and advanced to the second round of the Olympic Games, where he will face Briton Evans.

Tsitsipas saw Bergs break midway through the first set (2-3), but immediately broke back, leading to a tiebreak where his opponent again had the advantage and reached set point (5-6). However, Stefanos won three consecutive points to take the first set 1-0.

The second set, however, was a nightmare for the Greek tennis player, who made one mistake after another, losing 6-1.

The key moment of the match was the first game of the third set. There, Bergs not only had a break point but a huge opportunity to convert it, yet despite having Tsitsipas neutralized, he hit the ball out at the net, and the momentum shifted.

Tsitsipas held his serve and played excellently to reach 5-0 (!), with Bergs managing to take a consolation game and Stefanos securing the win 6-1.

Conversely, Petros Tsitsipas, who learned just a few hours earlier that he got a spot in the men’s singles due to withdrawals, was eliminated in the first round. Experienced Dutchman Griekspoor won 2-0 (6-2, 6-3), and now Petros looks forward to playing doubles with Stefanos.
