From 3 PM yesterday, hundreds of firefighters have been waging a titanic and uneven battle against the fire in northeastern Attica, which initially broke out in the Varnava area and has now reached Penteli, threatening Nea Makri as well.
As the fire department spokesperson noted in his first briefing on Monday morning, “All Civil Protection forces fought hard throughout the night, and despite their superhuman efforts, the fire spread rapidly.”
The most striking representation of this struggle is captured in a photograph taken outside the Penteli Children’s Hospital, from which 29 children had to be evacuated.

It should be noted that 510 firefighters, with 16 forest commando teams and 152 vehicles, are battling the massive fire front in northeastern Attica, along with a large number of volunteers, with the support of all relevant agencies.
