Emma Ramsey, a 19-year-old law student from Strathclyde University, died early on the morning of August 20 after falling from the sixth-floor balcony of her hotel in San Antonio, a resort town in northwest Ibiza. Local police are treating her death as an accident, though investigations into the exact cause are ongoing, according to the Guardian.
Before her death, Emma had posted pictures on social media showing her enjoying her vacation with friends. Her mother, Barbara, described her as “the best friend in the whole world,” and expressed her grief on social media: “I will miss you more than words could ever express. Rest in peace, my sweet angel, and sleep well. Mom loves you so much.”
Monica Lennon, a member of the Scottish Parliament, stated that Emma’s death has “shocked the entire community.” She added that everyone is “devastated,” and noted that the Foreign Office is assisting the family, who require privacy and support from the community, as reported by stv.news.
Emma is the second British tourist to die after falling from a hotel within four days, following a report that a 28-year-old man fell from his hotel room in Mallorca last Saturday.
In light of these incidents, British consulates in Mallorca and Ibiza have advised tourists to “stay close to their friends,” as both Emma and the 28-year-old man were alone at the time of their accidents.
