Ministry of Education on the death of the 57-year-old teacher in Thessaloniki: Do not jump to conclusions

The Ministry notes that at this stage, special attention is required in the public debate to ensure that the case is assessed with completeness, sobriety and institutional credibility.

The Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sport has issued an announcement on the death of 57-year-old teacher Sofia Christidou, who passed away on Saturday after a hemorrhagic stroke.

The statement stressed, among other things, the need not to draw hasty conclusions or make public judgments without a full examination of the facts.

The ministry notes that at this stage, special attention to public debate is required to ensure that the case is assessed with completeness, sobriety and institutional credibility.

The statement also notes that handling such a painful case requires seriousness, moderation and respect from all, especially when the public debate includes reports that touch on sensitive personal data and issues related to the health of a man who is no longer alive.

A detailed statement:

“The Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports expresses its deep sorrow for the loss of teacher Sophia Christidou and extends its sincere condolences to her family and loved ones.

The management of such a painful case requires seriousness, moderation and respect from everyone. Especially when the public debate includes reports that touch on sensitive personal data and information related to the health of a person who is no longer alive, institutional responsibility is self-evident.

From the very first moment that public reports and complaints were made, the competent bodies of the Ministry proceeded to gather and examine all relevant official data in order to assess the case with completeness, sobriety and institutional credibility.

At this stage, special care is required to avoid hasty conclusions or public judgments that are not based on a comprehensive examination of the facts.

The Ministry’s absolute priority is to ensure that every aspect of the case is examined with the seriousness, institutional responsibility and due respect for the deceased and the school community.”

It is recalled that the 57-year-old teacher, worked in a public school in Thessaloniki. On Saturday she died, after a hemorrhagic stroke. However, shortly before, in an official report to the authorities, she denounced incidents of aggressive behavior and intimidation that she claimed she received in the classroom from a specific group of students.

Investigations into the circumstances of the death are being conducted at both professional and departmental levels. In the case, the Ministry of Education has ordered an administrative inquiry under oath (EDE).
