The competent veterinary services have completed the second phase of the clinical examination and sampling of sheep and goat holdings located in the five protection and surveillance zones for goat and sheep disease in Western Greece.
Specifically, during the first phase of the mass clinical examination, approximately 1,700 farms and 260,000 animals were tested in the protection and surveillance zones of Aitoloakarnania and 685 farms and 100.000 animals in the zones of Ilia, while re-inspection and targeted re-inspection was carried out on 400 farms and 60,000 animals in the protection zones.
The re-inspections resulted in two new outbreaks in small goat farms in very close proximity to the primary outbreaks. The animals on both farms (a total of 14 goats) were killed and managed by health protocols.
The veterinary services of the Region of Western Greece are continuing on-site visits for clinical examination and sampling in goat and sheep farms based on epidemiological data.
