Art Athina 2024: Intense preparations for the start of Greece’s largest visual arts event

What art lovers will see this year at Zappeion

Newsroom August 26 10:30

For another year, the Zappeion Megaron will become a meeting point for diverse voices in global art. From September 19 to 23, the heart of the Greek capital will host Art Athina 2024, the largest domestic annual visual arts event. This year’s fair will offer art enthusiasts the chance to explore the latest visual creations and trends both in Greece and abroad, as well as to admire historical artworks.

This year’s event, which will last one extra day, will feature 71 Greek art galleries and ten from foreign countries, with key themes including contemporary art, design, inclusion, and sustainability.

Specifically, the Art Athina 2024 program is divided into three main sections. The first, titled “Main,” showcases artworks from galleries in Greece and abroad participating in the fair.

The second section, as the title “Design” suggests, focuses on presenting objects that blend traditional Greek techniques with modern, innovative proposals.

The third section, titled “Projects,” includes independent art spaces, non-profit cultural organizations, artist-run galleries, studios, and small new galleries.

Meanwhile, the parallel program of Art Athina includes four additional sections:

  • “Talks”, featuring discussions on the relationship between galleries and artists,
  • “Video”, showcasing works that explore the social and political dimensions of environmental issues, sexuality, and emotions,
  • “Performance”, presenting works related to freedom and identity expression, community dynamics, human and non-human relationships, and concepts such as care, ecology, sustainability, crises, and emergencies,
  • “Kids’ Educational Program”, an educational initiative for children and teenagers, which for the first time includes participants with learning difficulties and neurodevelopmental differences, featuring creative workshops in painting, architecture, collage, mixed media, and theatrical play.

It is worth noting that this year’s fair will not only be hosted in the central spaces of the Zappeion but will also extend to unseen corners of the building and its outdoor spaces, including the gardens and the summer cinema “Aigli.”

Additionally, the Art Athina Prize for Emerging Artist will be awarded for the third year. This prize is open to visual artists up to 45 years old who live and work in Greece and are nominated by their representing galleries, where they must have held at least one solo exhibition.
