The hottest August since 2010 was this year in North and Western Greece, Ionian and Peloponnese. According to the network of 53 weather stations of the Athens National Observatory of Athens (EAA)’s meteo.gr network, average monthly values were up to +1.8°C above normal for the season.
In the other geographic regions, this August was recorded as the second warmest since 2010 (August 2021 remains as the warmest). The exception is Thessaly, where it was the third warmest August.
August 2024 was a very warm month following the very warm June and July 2024, with the average values for the month being almost 1°C above the second warmest (August 2021) in Northern and Western Greece. Continuous positive divergences were recorded across the country from the beginning of the month to the end of the month, mainly in northern Greece, western Greece, Ionian and Peloponnese of 6-8°C above normal for the season. Small negative deviations were recorded only in the Aegean islands and Crete with the parallel predominance of north winds.
In Athens, the average monthly deviation of the maximum temperature was +1.2°C, with 25 of the 31 days of the month being warmer than normal for the season. In Thessaloniki, 24 days of the month were warmer than the 2010-2019 average, where the average maximum temperature for the month was +1.1°C above normal levels. At 60% of the EAA stations, 25 days (at least) out of 31 of the month were warmer than normal.
