Paralympic Games 2024: Konstantinos Tzounis Wins Bronze Medal in Discus Throw

The Greek discus thrower will be on the third step of the podium, throwing at 41 meters and 32 centimeters

Newsroom September 2 02:00

Konstantinos Tzounis secured the bronze medal in the discus throw final, F56 category, at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. The Greek discus thrower earned his place on the podium with a throw of 41.32 meters on his fifth attempt. His other throws measured 39.14m, 39.90m, and 37.87m, with two attempts being invalid.

The gold medal was claimed by Brazil’s Clodiney dos Santos Batista with a throw of 46.86 meters, and the silver went to India’s Yogesh Kathuniya with 42.22 meters.

Following the competition, Tzounis told ERT’s camera: “I still can’t fully grasp it. I want to say: ‘Mom, we did it!’ This was a goal of mine, to become a Paralympic medalist. First and foremost, I wanted to prove to myself that everything I did after Tokyo was not in vain. Four years is not a short time. I worked very hard. The competition was very tough, and everyone was close in performance. I was anxious about the invalid throws, as happened at the World Championships, but the conditions of this competition were unique. I came with a European record, better than the performance of the athlete who won the silver medal, but there were stress and special circumstances. My family came to see me, and I wanted to make them proud. Thank you, Greece!”
