Staikouras: Repairs to schools in Thessaly & Central Greece continue after the devastation caused by Daniel

All contracts were signed in June 2024 and the plan was for the projects to be completed by December 2024, in 33 schools, the transport minister said

Newsroom September 11 06:29

School units in the municipalities of Domokos Fthiotida and Palamas Karditsa, which were damaged by the bad weather “Daniel” and which are being completed restoration work by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, through its supervised body the “Building Infrastructures SA (KTYP)” visited, today, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras, on the occasion of the start of the new school year.

At the headquarters of the Municipality of Domokos and in the Municipal Unit of Neo Monastiri, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport visited operational school facilities, where restoration and upgrading works of their infrastructure are being carried out. These are.

– The Gymnasium and the General Lyceum of Domokos, as well as their Indoor Gymnasium.

– The Primary School and the Kindergarten of Domokos.

– The Primary and Secondary School of Dokdoctou and the Dombokomou Elementary School and the Dombokomou Elementary School.

– The Kindergarten of Domokos.

– The Kindergarten and the Primary School of Neo Monastiri.

– The Gymnasium and High School of Neo Monastiri.

Mr. Staikouras attended the consecration ceremonies and wished a happy and creative year to students and teachers, noting that, after the restoration works, the facilities of the school units are now in better condition than they were before the extensive damage caused by the bad weather “Daniel”.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport noted, indicatively, that the work being done in all the schools in both Domokos and Neos Monastiri adds up to 6 million euros, when the annual funding of the municipality for similar repairs is 14,800 euros.

As he said, addressing the students of the Gymnasium and the General Lyceum of Domokos:

“I want to thank all the contributors and the municipality and the teachers and the administration and the parents, because together they all contributed to a small miracle. In two months to significantly change the appearance of the exterior and interior of your school as well. I would ask you to respect the space you are in. They are important resources and it is especially important that those who leave the school leave a legacy for future generations. Because what we offer you from this year is much better than what your parents experienced in the same school a few years ago.”

In the Municipality of Palamas Karditsa, Mr. Staikouras visited two schools that remain closed as restoration work continues and are expected to open in the coming weeks:

– The 1st Kindergarten of Palamas.

– The 3rd Kindergarten of Palamas.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport said:

“The implementation of the important repairs to school units in Thessaly and Central Greece, as a result of the disasters caused by “Daniel”, continues according to the schedule we had set.

All contracts were signed in June 2024 and the plan was for the works to be completed by December 2024, in 33 school units. Already, today, bells have rung in several of them. Here we are, at Palamas Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 3, the work will be completed around next Friday, when they will be handed over to the kids. At the same time, work is also progressing in Farkadona – where we have been recently – in Trikala and in Magnesia. Many of these schools will be delivered earlier than December, probably November, so we will deliver much better schools than they were before the natural disaster.”

It is noted that targeted case-by-case building and electromechanical interventions are being carried out at each school, which, in addition to repairing the damage, are upgrading their infrastructure.

A total of 33 schools in Thessaly and Central Greece suffered damage from the bad weather “Daniel”. The total cost of restoration, which has been undertaken by the Union of Greek Shipowners (EUE), amounts to 30.5 million euros.
