In November 2023, the world of English football (and beyond) was shaken to its core when it was revealed that after years of investigation, Manchester City would face charges before an independent panel for 115 financial violations.
These violations could lead to the club facing relegation, title stripping, and it is almost certain that point deductions will be imposed.
“The trial will clear our name because we have done nothing illegal…” was roughly the position of the “Citizens” throughout this period, and after a long wait, that moment has arrived as the hearing begins on Monday, September 16.
The Premier League has accused City of failing to provide accurate financial information and of not correctly detailing payments to players and coaches.
The investigation started when Der Spiegel published documents from Football Leaks in 2018, and City is accused of channeling money from its owners through sponsors in the United Arab Emirates.
The club has declined to comment on the upcoming proceedings but maintains that it has committed no violations.
