A total of 296 migrants and refugees arrived on the island of Lampedusa last night.
Meanwhile, during the previous day, 487 people arrived on this small island south of Sicily.
Some of the migrants and refugees were spotted and rescued by speedboats from Frontex, the Italian Financial Police, and the Coast Guard. The Italian humanitarian ship Mare Ionio also rescued another 58 people who were aboard a boat that was drifting without control.
According to testimonies from the survivors, most of the boats began their journey from Sfax in Tunisia, as well as from Zuwara and Sabratha in Libya.
