The Meteora region has earned—rightfully so—a prominent feature in National Geographic’s documentary series, Europe from Above. In a short video shared on its official Instagram account, National Geographic offered its 280 million followers a stunning look at the dramatic rock formations and monasteries of Meteora, encouraging viewers to visit.
Employing the latest technology in aerial photography and video, National Geographic travels to the most extraordinary locations throughout the year, inspiring people to journey, explore, and fall in love with some of the world’s most remarkable sites. Now, the globally renowned publication has chosen to “make a stop” in Meteora, highlighting the area’s historic monasteries and rich heritage.
“Discover the monasteries of Meteora. Over the past 60 million years, erosion of an ancient seabed created this sacred refuge. For nearly a thousand years, it has sheltered a historic monastic community that once included over 20 unique monasteries,” reads the caption on National Geographic’s official account.
