Newsroom November 4 01:16

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Nafplio today, Monday, to participate in an event on the “National Strategy for Regional and Local Development: Discussing, Deciding, Moving Forward TOGETHER for Argolida.”

His first stop was the historic Church of St. Nicholas on the Nafplio waterfront, where he personally reviewed the ongoing restoration efforts, accompanied by a delegation from the Ministry of Culture and other ministers.

Mitsotakis was welcomed by the Metropolitan of Argolida, Nektarios, and the church’s parish priest, Father Nikolaos Michos. Father Michos provided an overview of the restoration progress, shared some history of the church, and invited the Prime Minister to attend the opening ceremony once renovations are complete. As a token of appreciation, the church council and the Metropolitan of Argolida presented Mitsotakis with a commemorative gift.

As of August 2016, the church faced significant structural risks, almost reaching the point of collapse due to lack of maintenance. A hole had formed in the roof, causing internal cracks in the 19th-century frescoes. Restoration work, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ESPA), aims to preserve this vital part of Greece’s cultural heritage.
