Thessaloniki: The Municipality closes a club that served alcohol to minors

Three minors reportedly consumed large quantities of alcohol and had to be transported to the hospital by ambulance

Newsroom November 4 03:11

The Municipality of Thessaloniki is closing a club that served alcohol to minors, which resulted in three teenagers ending up in the hospital early Sunday morning. Following the incident and the arrest of the temporary manager of the establishment, the municipal authorities were informed today by the police via a letter.

According to reports, the Deputy Mayor of Entrepreneurship, Pantelis Kazantidis, is expected to promptly revoke the establishment’s license, which is for operating as a café, and seal off the venue. It is noted that the three minors reportedly consumed large quantities of alcohol and needed to be transported to the hospital by ambulances from the EKAB (National Emergency Medical Service).

As reported by protothema.gr, the incident began half an hour after midnight when a group of three minors—two boys aged 15 and 16, a 14-year-old girl, and 12 of their friends—arrived at the well-known bar-club in Thessaloniki, where the staff allowed them entry.

During their time at the establishment, the minors reportedly ordered and consumed a total of three bottles of alcoholic beverages and felt unwell a few hours later.

EKAB stations were called to the scene, where they picked up the minors and transported them to “Papageorgiou” Hospital for first aid, without any health risks. One of the three minors left the hospital by noon, while the other two continued to be hospitalized as a precaution until late Sunday afternoon.

Authorities arrested a 56-year-old man, the temporary manager of the establishment, against whom a case was filed for “Exposure” by the White Tower Security Department. It should be noted that a police inspection carried out at this establishment confirmed its legal operation.

Additionally, the arrested individual had an outstanding conviction for seven months for unpaid contributions. Alongside the preliminary investigation into the case, the Public Prosecutor ordered a preliminary inquiry for further assessment of the incident regarding the potential criminal responsibility of the owner of the establishment, waitstaff, and the parents of the minors.
