Violent incidents erupted in Amsterdam following the end of the Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
According to Dutch media, groups of Arabs had set up an ambush outside the stadium targeting fans of the Israeli team, leading to intense clashes.
Reports from Dutch sources indicate several Maccabi fans were injured, with some sustaining stab wounds. Some fans jumped into the icy waters of Amsterdam’s canals to escape the hostile crowd. Dutch authorities have confirmed that at least 10 people were injured.
Several arrests have been made, while the Israeli Embassy in the Netherlands has intervened to help ensure the Maccabi fans are moved to a safe location.
According to Dutch media, the clashes were sparked by actions from Israeli supporters, who reportedly tore down Palestinian flags displayed in windows of nearby homes.
Israeli sources note that in addition to Maccabi’s regular security detail, Mossad agents were also present to provide extra protection for the team.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was briefed on the violent incident targeting Israeli citizens, according to a statement from his office on Friday. Netanyahu ordered the immediate dispatch of two aircraft to assist in bringing the citizens back to Israel.
