The Turks have resumed their provocations in the Aegean Sea

Turkish violations between Rhodes and Kastelorizo - Anger in Ankara over the Commission's map

Newsroom November 21 12:04

Tensions have risen in Ankara following the recent European Commission map related to the EU’s Maritime Spatial Planning Framework, which granted maximum maritime influence to all Greek mainland and island territories.

After a 21-month pause, Turkey has reverted to its old tactics of violating Greek airspace in the Aegean.

In recent days, multiple violations of the Athens FIR have been recorded in the southeastern area between Rhodes and Kastellorizo. The Greek side responded with the standard identification procedures.

On Tuesday, November 19, the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS) announced that Turkish air forces conducted 12 violations of the Athens FIR.

Among other activities, Turkey deployed fighter jets in Greek airspace, including six formations of F-16s and F-4 Phantoms, which carried out a record number of violations for 2024.

These violations are linked to Turkey’s ongoing joint military exercise, “Kaplan Pencesi 2024,” spanning from the eastern area of Rhodes to regions between Turkish-occupied Cyprus and Turkey.
