SYRIZA elections: Four contenders face off in the first round

Polls open across Greece as SYRIZA seeks revival through high turnout in leadership vote

Today marks the first round of SYRIZA Progressive Alliance’s internal elections to choose the party’s new President. Voting is taking place in 400 polling stations across Greece.

The polls opened at 8:00 AM and are expected to close at 7:00 PM, barring any extensions. High voter turnout is a key goal for the party, as surpassing 60,000 participants is viewed as a critical step in revitalizing SYRIZA after a prolonged period of internal challenges lasting over a year and a half.

The candidates vying for the presidency of SYRIZA are:

If none of the four secures a majority in today’s vote, a second round of internal elections will take place on December 1.

Today’s Voting Schedule

  • Sokratis Famellos:
    Famellos is set to vote at 10:30 AM in Thermi, followed by visits to the Thessaloniki voting center (City Hall foyer) at 11:30 AM and the Kordelio-Evosmos Municipal Hall at 12:30 PM. He will monitor the results from the SYRIZA-PS offices on Leonidou Street in the evening.
  • Pavlos Polakis:
    Polakis will vote at 11:30 AM at the Moschato OM polling station, located in the Moschato-Tavros Cultural Center at the intersection of Solomou and Konstantinoupoleos Streets. He will follow the results from the SYRIZA headquarters on Syngrou Avenue, building 318.
  • Nikolas Farantouris:
    Farantouris is scheduled to vote at the Old Pallini Town Hall (25 Feidippidou Street) at 10:30 AM.
  • Apostolos Gletsos:
    Gletsos will cast his vote at 11:30 AM in Pangrati.

Tsipras Makes His Presence Known

Former Prime Minister and SYRIZA President Alexis Tsipras is also expected to participate in the vote. He will cast his ballot at noon at the 26th Elementary School of Athens, located at 63 Fokionos Negri Street in Victoria Square, Kypseli.
