Athens: 1,388 cameras are coming, will send SMS for traffic violations – Through the wallet the call

The points were indicated by the Traffic Police for their installation - Papastergiou: We aim for the system to be operational by the summer of 2025

Newsroom November 28 09:33

Details on the plan to be presented today regarding the installation of cameras for traffic, policing and citizen security were given by the Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou.

As he explained, in addition to the 388 cameras to be purchased by the Attica region under a contract signed a few days ago, the government will add another 1,000 cameras in Athens and in other locations indicated by the ELAS.

Explaining how the new system, which he said will take effect from the summer of 2025 onwards, will work, Papastergiou said that “the purpose is that when an offence is committed, it goes directly to the offender.”

“From the moment you are registered in the national communication registry, a SMS will come that you are being checked for an infringement and at the same time the material – photos and videos – will go to the ELAS where a police officer will confirm the infringement,” continued Papastergiou, whose ministry is running two tenders for the cameras and the information system.

The next step is that “it will come to your mailbox that will take a place in the wallet of gov.gr, there will be a video and photo of the violation and the possibility of either payment or dispute will be given.”

The government plan for the installation of toll cameras will be presented by Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Staikouras, Citizen Protection Minister Michael Chrysochoidis, Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou and Attica Region Mayor Nikos Hardalias. The presentation will be coordinated by the Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and Government Spokesman Pavlos Marinakis.

Parisakis, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, will be accompanied by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Pavel Mariniaris.

A few days ago, the regional governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, signed a contract for the supply and installation of 388 state-of-the-art cameras to monitor red light violation.

The installation of the cameras will be carried out, following a suggestion from the competent services of the Attica Road Safety, in key points of the Attica basin where most serious accidents have been recorded in the past.

Indicatively, monitoring devices will be placed at the intersections of Sygrou, Vouliagmenis, Katehaki, Mesogeion, Kifissia, Piraeus, Vassilissis Amalias, Panepistimiou, Vassilissis Sofias and Vassilissis Sofias avenues, Alexandra, Peania – Koropi, Kifissis, Vassilissis Olga, Galatsiou, Veikou, Patision, Akademias, Davakis, Amphithea, Poseidonos, Thevon, Heroes of Polytechnic, Acharnon, Dekelias, NATO and Democracy.

Full protection of personal data – No human intervention

It is noted that the cameras that will be installed at the traffic lights will operate throughout the day and night as they are capable of taking photos and videos even under low light conditions. In order to respect the protection of personal data, only the rear of the vehicle will be recorded, so that the occupants cannot be seen.

Subsequently, in cooperation with the Ministry of Digital Governance and the Ministry of Citizen Protection, the relevant material will be sent automatically, without any human intervention, to a central infringement management server. Only the Greek Police will have exclusive access, imposing the prescribed penalties on offenders, in accordance with the provisions of the Road Traffic Code.
