Giannis Antetokounmpo makes a move into cinema with Klelia Andriolatou and Julia Fox

The NBA star enters the film industry, collaborating with Greek-American producer Christopher André Marks on their first narrative feature film, titled "Mykonos"

Newsroom November 29 08:54

Giannis Antetokounmpo is making his debut in the film industry, collaborating with Greek-American producer Christopher André Marks on a new project titled Mykonos. This film, which marks their first narrative feature, was shot on the island of Mykonos under strict confidentiality. Antetokounmpo and Marks have joined forces to create a movie that blends their deep love for Greece and its culture with a strong entrepreneurial spirit.

The film, described as a comedic heist movie, follows a group of eccentric noble thieves who steal from arrogant, wealthy tourists destroying the island each summer. The cast features both well-known Greek and international actors, including Klelia Andriolatou, Julia Fox, Ricardo Scamarcio, and Andrew Georgiadis. This ambitious project is also backed by global production companies and aims to spotlight Greece’s rich history and traditions, contrasting the often party-centric image of Mykonos.

The production is being handled by Studio Galazio, a new company founded by Marks that focuses on creating films and TV series with a strong Greek element for international distribution. Marks, a seasoned director and producer, has previously worked on notable documentaries like King Otto, which chronicled Greece’s football team’s unexpected victory at the 2004 European Championship. His passion for Greek culture has played a pivotal role in the creation of Mykonos, as he aims to highlight the island’s authenticity and historical depth.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s involvement comes through his production company, Improbable Media, which he founded in early 2024. This company focuses on creating films and series that tell the stories of athletes, artists, and public figures from their own perspective, offering them more control over their narratives. Mykonos represents the first fictional feature film under this banner, marking an exciting new chapter in Antetokounmpo’s ventures beyond basketball.

This collaboration signals a significant step for both Antetokounmpo and Marks in expanding Greek cinema’s presence on the international stage. Marks has already announced two other projects in development that continue this Greek-centric focus, while Antetokounmpo’s company has also produced various documentaries and commercials, including the award-winning Giannis: The Marvelous Journey, available on Amazon Prime Video.
