A change in weather is expected starting tomorrow (Dec 20), which will be in two successive waves.
Specifically, according to meteorologists’ forecasts, heavy rain, thunderstorms and snow in mountainous areas are expected.
As meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis said, “From tomorrow (19/12) we will have two successive waves of bad weather. Initially from the west with showers that will gradually intensify in the afternoon and thunderstorms will occur. At night the phenomena will extend eastwards, affecting the eastern Aegean islands, the Cyclades and Crete. The winds will shift and strengthen, approaching 6-7 Beaufort“.
Sakis Arnaoutoglou in his own forecast said the weather is expected to change significantly in the coming days, bringing cold and snowfall. In fact, he stressed that snow will fall even at lower altitudes in areas of the mainland.
EMS forecast for Friday
Change in the weather from Friday afternoon in western Greece with showers and thunderstorms likely to be heavy in places.
On Saturday, the strong phenomena will extend further east and mainly to the East Aegean islands and the Dodecanese.
Increased clouds in the west with showers and occasional thunderstorms from noon onwards, possibly heavy in places.
From the afternoon clouds will extend to the rest of the country and during the night there will be sporadic thunderstorms.
Snowfall will occur in the evening hours in the mountains of Epirus, western Central Greece and western Macedonia. Visibility in the morning hours on the mainland will be limited in places.
Winds will blow west southwest 3 to 5 Beaufort, from noon in the south and west 6 to 7 Beaufort, and at night in the Ionian Sea locally up to 8 Beaufort.
The temperature will not change significantly and will reach 13 to 15 degrees Celsius in the north, 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in the centre and 19 to 20 degrees Celsius in some places on the southern mainland and the southern islands.
The weather on Saturday, December 21
Increased clouds with rain and occasional thunderstorms are forecast throughout the country. The phenomena are likely to be strong, until noon in the western Peloponnese, central and eastern Macedonia, Thrace and occasionally in southwestern Crete, until late afternoon in the eastern Aegean islands and from midday until evening in the Dodecanese. Snowfall will occur in the mountains of the mainland until the afternoon.
Winds will blow west southwest 5 to 7 and in the sea locally 8 Beaufort, turning initially in the west and north and gradually in the rest to northwest with the same intensity. Gradual weakening is expected from the evening hours.
The temperature will drop in most areas and will not exceed 10 to 12 degrees Celsius in the north, while it will reach 15 to 17 degrees Celsius in other areas and 18 to 20 degrees Celsius in the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese.
The weather forecast for Sunday (22/12)
Unsettled and cloudy weather is forecast in most parts of the country with local rain mainly in the west, south and eastern islands.
Isolated thunderstorms are likely to occur in the southern maritime – coastal areas, while a few snowfalls will fall in the northern mountainous areas. Winds will blow west northwest 3 to 5 and in the morning hours in the sea up to 6 Beaufort.
The temperature will drop slightly and will reach 08 to 10 degrees Celsius in the north, 13 to 15 degrees Celsius in the rest of the regions and 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese.
In the morning and evening hours frost will occur in some places in the northwestern continental areas.
The weather on Monday
In the eastern and southern island country clouds are forecast, partly cloudy with local rain. In the rest of Greece, rain and occasional thunderstorms are forecast.
The phenomena will probably be strong in places in the west and the north. Snowfall will occur in the northern mountains, which will be dense in places.
Winds will blow south-southwest 4 to 6 and gradually, mainly in the sea, 7 to 8 Beaufort. The temperature will rise slightly towards its maximum values. However, in the morning and evening hours in the northwestern continental areas there will be frost in places.
The forecast for Tuesday 24 December
Cloudy with local showers and occasional thunderstorms. The phenomena, which are likely to be strong in places, will weaken from noon in the Ionian Sea and the mainland and will gradually stop. Snowfall will occur in the continental highlands and in the mountains of Crete.
Winds will blow west southwest 5 to 7 and in the sea locally 8 Beaufort, quickly turning to the west and north and gradually to the rest of the continent to north 4 to 6 Beaufort.
