Two of the four perpetrators of the deadly attack that took place at dawn on New Year’s Day in the center of Serres and resulted in the death of a 34-year-old man remain at large.
The victim was the father of two children and was expecting his third soon, as his wife is pregnant.
How the fatal attack happened
The incident happened shortly after 5am on New Year’s Day in the pedestrian street of Serres on Corfu Street. It all started when the victim – who was probably drunk – wanted to enter a nightclub with two other friends. At the door was one of the perpetrators, who refused to allow the group to enter, resulting in a verbal altercation. The victim’s party left and after about an hour it is speculated that they either made an appointment with the bouncer’s friends, or waited for the club to close, because they met again, this time in an alley next to the city’s main pedestrian street.
Within just a few minutes the blood was on fire and on top of the melee the perpetrators (four in number) fatally wounded the 34-year-old with a knife, inflicting two stab wounds to the left side of his body, specifically to his ribs and groin. In fact, according to reliable police sources, one of the assailants fired a percussion gas pistol more than five times in the air.
Although the victim was taken by ambulance to Serres hospital, he breathed his last a few hours later.
He died at the scene of his death. When police officers arrived at the scene of the bloody incident, they found and confiscated 6 shell casings from a crack-gas pistol.
A short time later two of the four offenders – a 29-year-old man from Albania and a 27-year-old Greek man – were arrested. Authorities have launched a manhunt to locate and arrest the other two, a 28-year-old and a 30-year-old. A case has been filed in the case on the charge of intentional homicide and abetting.
