Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced today (January 6) his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party, a position he has held for 11 years.

He also announced that Canada’s Parliament will be dissolved on March 24 to pave the way for parliamentary elections.

The announcement came amidst mounting pressure for him to also step down from the country’s premiership, a role he has held for nine years, ahead of elections scheduled to be held by October 2025. Polls indicate that the opposition Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, is expected to win the race decisively.
