Strong winds, rain and thunderstorms for another 24 hours – Snow at low altitude in half of Greece

Where schools will be closed - The roads where traffic is prohibited

The bad weather is “sweeping” the country with several areas in the west and north covered in snow, while temperatures have dropped significantly.

Specifically, the ongoing wave of bad weather is expected to continue on Tuesday (14/1) in many areas of the country with snow, rain, and low temperatures.

Klearchos Marousakis

Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis told Open TV, among other things, “It looks like severe weather conditions will persist for another 24 hours. And through the night today and tomorrow will persist and snowfall and thunderstorms towards the southern and eastern sea areas and gusty winds. There will be snowfall at low altitudes, towards the central and northern mainland, and even in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of the Peloponnese. This means that snowfall may again be seen in cities. Particularly in the regions of Macedonia, Thrace, but also Thessaly. And in the region of Sterea, we will have snowfall tomorrow even at very low altitudes.”

The forecast for Tuesday, January 14

Increased clouds with showers are expected throughout the country, while thunderstorms will occur mainly in the central and southern parts of the country. Snowfall will occur in mountainous – semi-mountainous areas and locally in central and northern areas with lower altitudes. The phenomena in the north will gradually weaken.

Winds will blow in the west-east and in the east-northeast up to 8 to 9 Beaufort, with gradual weakening from the afternoon, while in the southeastern Aegean Sea will blow south southeast 4 to 5 Beaufort.

The temperature will range in the northern and central mainland from -04 (minus 4) to 08 degrees Celsius, in the rest of the mainland, the Ionian and northern Aegean islands from 02 to 13 degrees Celsius, and in the rest of the island country from 10 to 18 degrees Celsius.

Frost will occur in places on the mainland, mainly in the central and northern parts, which will be locally total in the northwestern mainland.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast in the Ionian Sea (mainly the south), the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean, the Peloponnese (mainly the west and south), Central Greece, Thessaly (mainly the east), the Sporades, Evia and occasionally the Cyclades.

In Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace snowfall will occur locally in mountainous – semi-mountainous areas and in some places in areas with lower altitudes, which will gradually decrease.

In Thessaly, Central Greece, and the Peloponnese, heavy snowfall will occur in mountainous – semi-mountainous, and lower-altitude areas of Thessaly and Central Greece (Fthiotida, Boeotia).

In the Aegean Sea gusty northeast winds of 8 and the north 9 Beaufort will blow. In the Ionian Sea, gusty easterly winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort will blow. Gradual weakening is expected from the afternoon hours.

Snow affected areas 

Areas of Thessaloniki were “dressed in white” with residents of Chortiatis waking up to white roads as snow started falling yesterday evening.

Snow also fell in Fthiotida, Evritania, and Fokida, especially in the mountains and semi-mountainous areas and at altitudes above 250 meters.

Dense snowfall covered the villages peripheral to Parnassus such as Amfiklia, Eptalofos, Polydroso, and the villages of Gravia. Pavliani was also dressed in “white”.

Roads closed in Chortiatis – Areas where traffic has been blocked

The Municipal street of Kissos, in Thessaloniki, remains closed from Monday evening due to snowfall.

“According to a decision of the Traffic Directorate of Thessaloniki, from 19:25 on 13/01/2025 and until further notice, there is a traffic ban for all vehicles on the Municipal road Kissesos, along its entire length (from Kissesos Street 01 to Katafygio Hortiatis), D.E. Hortiatis. The traffic of vehicles will be conducted through the rest of the road network” says the EL.AS.

Four provincial roads in Thessaloniki have been banned since yesterday the traffic of all vehicles due to snowfall and the extremely low temperatures prevailing, resulting in frost.

From 13:05, the traffic of all vehicles on the Provincial Road of Oraiokastro – Melissochori was interrupted due to the occurrence of extraordinary adverse weather phenomena (snowfall). The traffic of vehicles will be conducted through the other road network.

In addition, the traffic of all vehicles has been prohibited from 19:45 on the provincial road Chortiatis – Agios Vasileiou. The traffic of vehicles will be conducted through the other road network.

Also, part of the provincial road of Mavroneri – Vathilakkou from the exit of Vathilakkou to the intersection of Paliu Agioneri remains closed. Vehicle traffic will be conducted via the Thessaloniki – Evzona highway.

Additionally, traffic has been prohibited on the provincial road Prochoma-Xironeri from the intersection of Paliu Ayoneri until its junction with the provincial road Xirochori – Nea Mesimvria. Vehicle traffic will be conducted through the Provincial road of Mesimvria – Xirochori and the Old Thessaloniki – Evzona road.

Where schools will be closed Tuesday, December 14

Many schools in central and northern Greece will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 14, 2025, as severe bad weather with snowfall is underway.

In those school units where the operation is suspended, lessons will be held as normal through distance learning, according to the provisions for primary and secondary education.

By decision of the local government, schools in the following areas will be closed tomorrow due to snowfall:

Central Macedonia

The Municipality of Edessa has decided to suspend the operation of all primary and secondary schools on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. In addition, the Battani Creative Activity Centre in Edessa, the Children’s Creative Activity Centre in Arnissa, and the Creative Activity Centre for Children with Disabilities Horizon will not operate.

The nursery and kindergartens of the Municipality will operate normally, however, there will be no transportation of infants by school bus to Vegoritida.

Also tomorrow, Tuesday, January 14, 2025, due to snowfall, frost, and low temperatures, all primary and secondary education schools as well as the Creative Employment Centres and the Children’s Centres of the Municipality of Volvi will be closed.

All schools will be closed on Tuesday 14/1/2025, due to frost, as decided the Municipality of Amphipolis.

Western Macedonia

By the decision of the Mayor of Florina, Mr. Vasilis Giannakis, the primary and secondary schools of the Municipality of Florina will be closed on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, due to the adverse weather conditions (snowfall and low temperatures) prevailing in the region. Also, the Creative Employment Centres and the Creative Employment Centre for Children with Disabilities of the Municipality of Florina will be closed. The kindergartens will operate normally.

Due to adverse weather conditions prevailing in the region (snowfall and total frost), by decision of the Mayor of Kozani Yannis Kokkaliaris, all Primary & Secondary Education (Kindergartens, Elementary, High Schools, High Schools), Special Education (Primary and Secondary) and Evening High Schools, High Schools and EPAL of the Municipality of Kozani will be closed on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. Also, the Children’s and Nursery Schools will remain closed.

By the decision of the Mayor of Prespes, George Stergios, schools of all levels and the Creative Employment Center of the Municipality of Prespes will be closed on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, due to the adverse weather conditions in the area. The kindergarten will operate normally.

By decision of the Mayor of Amyndeon, Ioannis Liasi, on Tuesday 14 January 2025 the Primary and Secondary schools of the Municipality of Amyndeon will be closed due to adverse weather conditions. Kindergartens will operate normally.

All Primary & Secondary Education Units of the Municipality of Eordaias, as well as the Evening School of Education, on January 14, 2025, will be closed due to adverse weather conditions (snowfall – low temperatures). The Municipal Kindergartens will operate normally.

Eastern Macedonia and Thrace

By decision of the mayor of Arrianon Rhodope, Hussein Erdem, and in view of the continuation of snowfall and frost in the region, the schools will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 14, the minority primary schools of Myrtiskis, Organi, Ano Drosini, Drimi, Esochi, Kehrou, Kerasias and Chloe, the kindergartens of Organi, Esochi, Kehrou and Chloe, as well as the secondary school of Organi.

Thessaly

The schools of both levels of the Municipality of Sofades will not operate tomorrow, Tuesday, due to the severe weather conditions that prevail and make it dangerous for students to stay in schools, by the decision of Mayor Demosthenes Katsis.

The Mayor of Domokos, Charalambos V. Liolios, announced the closure of the Primary and Secondary Education schools, the Children’s Centers, and the Employment Centers of the Municipality on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, due to the severe weather phenomena prevailing in the region, such as snowfall and low temperatures.

On Tuesday, 14-01-2025, the schools of A/th grade education will remain closed in Chrysomilia – Abelia – Oxynia – Agiophyllos – Asproklisia and Panagia, of the Municipality of Meteora, according to a decision of the Municipality of Meteora. The schools of secondary education in Abelia and Oxynia, of the Municipality of Meteora, will also remain closed.

Central Greece

The Municipality of Domokos decided to close the Primary and Secondary Education schools, the Children’s Centres and the Creative Employment Centres of the Municipality on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, due to the severe weather phenomena prevailing in the region, such as snowfall and low temperatures.

The Municipality of Chalkideon informs that, at the request of the Director of the Single Special Vocational High School (EN.E.E.GY.L) of Chalkida, the operation of the school will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 14, 2025, by decision of the Mayor of Chalkidea, Elena Vaka, due to the adverse weather conditions, which create problems in the electricity supply of the school and the movement of students from other municipalities.
