Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer resigns over corruption allegations

Tulip Rizwana Siddiq is the niece of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is being prosecuted for embezzling billions - She is accused of using properties in London linked to her aunt's associates

Newsroom January 14 10:15

Tulip Rizwana Siddiq Chancellor of the Exchequer of Britain, announced today that she has resigned from the government, following intense criticism of her family ties to the Bangladeshi prime minister and accusations of corruption.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the finance minister is the niece of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was implicated in a corruption case and even fled her country amid bloody protests.

In addition, Siddiq is accused of making use of properties in London linked to her aunt’s associates, while facing an investigation into her family’s role in misappropriating billions from a nuclear power plant project. Although she denies any involvement, the pressure she was under led her to decide to leave her position.

In a letter to Labour Party leader, Kir Starmer, Siddique stressed that independent councillor, Sir Laurie Magnus CBE, found that she had not breached the ministerial code. However, Magnus’ report raised issues related to her personal reputation and government credibility given her connection to Bangladesh.

He noted that Siddique’s ministerial responsibilities, which include promoting the financial integrity of the UK, require a high standard of vigilance.

Starmer said he was “saddened” by her departure, leaving open the possibility of her returning in the future.
