Gas consumption increased by 30.03% in 2024 compared to 2023

Total demand, which apart from domestic consumption also includes exports, increased by 2.23%, reaching 69.11 terawatt hours

Newsroom January 14 07:40

Domestic gas consumption in Greece increased significantly by 30.03% compared to 2023, according to DESFA’s data for 2024. This was driven by an increase in consumption by power plants (+31.59%), by large industries and compressed natural gas (CNG) stations directly connected to the National Transmission System (+74.13%), as well as by residential consumers and companies connected to the distribution networks (+4.83%).

Total demand, which in addition to domestic consumption also includes exports, increased by 2.23%, reaching 69.11 terawatt hours (TWh) from 67.6 TWh in 2023. Domestic consumption, rose to 66.2 TWh from 50.91 TWh, while gas exports, on the contrary, decreased by 82.56% from 16.69 TWh in the previous year. Despite the decrease recorded on a year-on-year basis, exports recorded a significant increase in the last quarter of 2024 – from 0.66 terawatt hours (TWh) in the first nine months of 2024 to 2.91 terawatt hours (TWh) at the end of the year – mainly due to the start of commercial operation of the Alexandroupolis FSRU and the interconnection of the IGB pipeline with the National Gas Transmission System in Komotini.

Natural gas imports amounted to 69.37 TWh, registering an increase of 2.45% compared to 67.71 TWh in 2023. The largest quantities were imported into the National Gas System from the Sidirokastro Entry Point, amounting to 51.6% (35.8 TWh) of total imports in 2024. In terms of the contribution of the other entry points, the Revithoussa Terminal covered 26.43% of imports (18.34 TWh), followed by the entry point at Nea Mesimbria, through which gas is delivered from the TAP pipeline, which covered 18.07% of imports (12.54 TWh). Finally, 2.69 TWh were imported from the entry point of Amfitriti (FSRU Alexandroupolis), which corresponds to 3.87% of total imports.

The US remained the largest LNG importer in the country with 13.89 TWh (71.64% of total LNG imports) from 19 tankers compared to 10.75 TWh from 17 tankers in 2024, an increase of 24.56%. In second place was Russia with 2.86 TWh (15.3%), with volumes recording a 65.87% decrease compared to 2023. Algeria followed with 1.46 TWh (7.81%), while the last place for 2024 was occupied by Norway with 0.98 TWh (5.24%). Regarding the LNG Truck Loading service in Revithusa, 261 LNG Trucks were loaded in 2024, handling a quantity of 11,632 m3 of LNG or 76,704 MWh of energy equivalent.

In terms of natural gas consumer categories, the largest share of domestic consumption (68.65%) was for power plants, which recorded an increase of 31.59% compared to the same period last year. Consumption by household consumers and enterprises connected to distribution networks accounted for 17.71% of total domestic demand, an increase of 4.83% compared to the previous year. Finally, domestic industries and CNG stations, directly connected to the high-pressure system of DESFA, increased their natural gas use by 74.34% compared to 2023, covering 13.62% of domestic consumption for 2024.
