Members of the world’s political and economic elite are in the Swiss ski resort of Davos for the World Economic Forum, which starts today.
According to the WEF, some 900 business leaders and 60 heads of state and government will participate in this year’s forum. The leaders’ speeches will begin tomorrow, Tuesday, after today’s official opening of the conference.
The official programme includes talks and panels on cybercrime, artificial intelligence and technological change, under the motto “working together for the smart age”.
The Return of Donald Trump
However, it is estimated that the main theme of this year’s meeting is the return of Donald Trump to the White House, as his second term raises questions about his actions.
Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on imports from China and other major US trading partners, most of whom will be represented at the World Economic Forum.
Trump was the first sitting president who had personally attended the forum in his first term. On Thursday, the 78-year-old will again deliver a speech in Davos, this time via video link.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to speak tomorrow, Tuesday, as is Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
