31-year-old woman arrested in Kos for defrauding an elderly man of €35,000

The woman deceived the elderly man by claiming a relative of his was involved in a car accident

Newsroom January 27 12:06

A case of fraud targeting an elderly man using the method of claiming a relative was involved in a car accident was solved yesterday following a thorough investigation by the Crime Investigation and Detection Department of Kos.

For this case, a criminal file was prepared against a 31-year-old foreign national, who was identified as the individual responsible for collecting the money in the fraudulent scheme.

Specifically, the day before yesterday, at midday, an unidentified perpetrator called an elderly man, claiming that his son had been involved in a car accident that resulted in the fatal injury of a foreign national. Exploiting the elderly man’s emotional distress, the perpetrator demanded a large sum of money to avoid immediate legal consequences and imprisonment of the relative involved.

The incident was reported yesterday to the Crime Investigation and Detection Department of Kos. Police immediately investigated the case and located the 31-year-old woman at the port of Kos while she was attempting to leave the island. In her possession, officers found €33,000, which was confiscated to be returned to its rightful owner.

The arrested woman will be brought before the Kos Prosecutor’s Office, while the police investigation continues to fully uncover the extent of the case and identify any additional perpetrators.
